It actually wasn’t that long ago that the original Metro 2033 had come out for the Xbox 360 and PC in 2010. But 4A games (the developer) made a really good engine and set pieces for its sequel Metro: Last Light. So naturally they applied these things to the first game and remade 2033 from the ground up. These changes were lighting, character design, and environments and a lot more. Which were enough changes that I went back to play it to find out how much changed. And for those who loved last light or the original I can’t help but recommend they go and pick up a copy .
For starters the narrative now has more atmosphere. You do truly feel more
immersed in this 2033 world. The player is immersed in a dirty, lived in, crowded world. The characters you meet are filthy, having lived in this metro there entire life and never having met a shower. There were times I gagged at how horrible these people lived here (if you do play the game imagine living with the pigs you run into). Everything you interact with has an homemade or man made feeling to it like it was cobbled together with spare parts. is weaves together creating the framework for a good game
The narrative is fantastic. You play as Art
yom a survivor of an nuclear war between the US and Russia where he lives in the underground railways of post apocalyptic Moscow. It soon becomes a fight for survival as your trying to gather troops to save your home station of Polis from the dark ones ( creatures that came after the war, and seem to be the next evolution step of man). The player travels to stations, above ground, hidden bunkers, animal dens. The narrative is a coming of age tale for Artyom, as his story ark unfolds. I wont spoil the plot for now, but pick it if you find it for under 20.
I played threw this in its entirety and had a revelation at the end of the game. Games are the only thing consistently improving in our society with technology. It came to me as I saw this world and felt something for the characters in the game (sympathy/empathy). It’s never been a better time to be a gamer, and for whats that worth I hope you can find time to squeeze a good game that makes you feel something in your life. It doesn’t have to be Metro 2033 or any post apocalyptic shooter rather something that just grabs your attention and transcends being a game and becomes important to you.
